Insurances and Licenses Locksmiths Need

Insurances and Licenses Locksmiths Need

As a Locksmith you will be required to and are recommended to hold some insurances and licenses to carry out your work safely. Discover them below:

Public Liability Insurance

All Locksmiths are required by law to have Public Liability Insurance as you are an important factor in the safety and security of your customer’s homes. Public Liability Insurance is one of the most important insurances and licenses you will hold as a Locksmith as it will cover you for any losses or damages that might occur due to your work. This includes if a member of the public is accidentally injured whilst you are working, if your customer suffers financial loss as a result of your work or if you accidentally cause damage to their property or belongings. You can compare quotes of Public Liability Insurance on all of the major price comparison websites.

DBS check

DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service and is previously known as a CRB check. The reason the DBS exists is to help prevent unsuitable people working with vulnerable groups. Locksmiths come into contact with many vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities and sometimes children.

There are four levels of a DBS check, they are:

  • Basic check
  • Standard check
  • Enhanced check
  • Enhanced check with barred list(s)

Basic DBS check

The basic check is suitable to be used for any job role or purpose which includes Locksmiths. A basic DBS check will contain details on any convictions and conditional cautions that are considered to be unspent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. You can apply for a DBS check through the website (click here) and it costs £23.

A DBS check isn’t a requirement by law for Locksmiths but it is required by most Locksmith subcontractors such as Keytek® Locksmiths. This is to ensure that our customers can rest in the knowledge that they and their home will be safe in the hands of our Locksmiths.

Locksmith certificates/accreditation

Did you know that currently in the UK you do not need an official qualification to class yourself as a Locksmith? However, times are changing and health and safety laws are on the rise. New for 2020 is the first ever Locksmith Qualification, (we offer the UK’s first Locksmith Qualification here at our training academy – click here to see more) before now the highest achievement a Locksmith could earn was an accreditation.

Holding a Locksmith qualification or accreditation is lawfully required by most subcontractors such as Keytek® Locksmiths, we require all of our Locksmiths to have efficient Locksmith training so that our customers receive the best quality workmanship.

Waste Carrier License

In 2014 the laws around waste changed for many businesses to prevent any further damage to the environment, this resulted in offenders being fined up to £5,000. Currently, a Waste Carrier License is not required for Locksmiths by law but as with the qualifications we believe this is set to change in the near future. However, the lower tier of Waste Carriers License is free so we recommend that all Locksmiths obtain a Waste Carrier License to add to their list of insurances and licenses they hold. Sign up for a Waste Carrier License (click here).
