If you are looking into doing a Locksmith course, then you may feel overwhelmed with what’s on offer. The confusion can come from what is classed as a ‘Locksmith Qualification‘ and what isn’t. The right Locksmith course for you depends on a number of factors: your experience level, your budget, and what you wish to do after you have trained.

Brand New to the Industry?

If you have never worked as a Locksmith before, then the best Locksmith course for you might be a 5-Day Accreditation or an 8-Day Locksmith Qualification. These types of courses give you the full range of skills and techniques to be able to trade as a Locksmith once you complete it. There are options of undertaking 2 or 3 days courses, but these won’t fully train you to handle every situation you may face a Locksmith.

Experienced but Want to Brush up Your Skills?

This is where shorter length courses might be the right ones for you. For example, Keytek® offer a 2-Day Non-Destructive Entry Course that’s good for experience Locksmiths who just want to keep their skills sharp and up to date. Doors and locks are constantly evolving and advancing so many Locksmiths want to make sure they are still offering the best service.

Want to Branch Out?

There are many different courses on offer, by different providers. It’s worth doing your research and not only understanding what the course offers but what you get for the price. Will you get a qualification or accreditation? Is the certificate through an awarding body such as the NCFE or Highfield? Make sure you get bang for your buck when choosing your Locksmith course.

Qualification or Accreditation?

Up until recently there was no official qualification for Locksmithing, however Keytek® Locksmith Training Academy were one of the first training centres to offer a training course that earns you an official qualification. While its true that there is still no legal requirement for a person to obtain a Locksmith qualification before trading as a Locksmith, we heavily recommend that you consider undertaking one. By having a qualification, you will be future proofing your Locksmithing career as more an more regulation comes into the industry and will have a unique selling point to your customers as a qualified Locksmith.

You are still able to access an accreditation course if you wish, which will give you the skill it requires to become a successful, trading Locksmith. You just won’t be able to call yourself qualified.

Take a Look at Locksmiths in Your Area

Google Locksmiths in your area, see what skillsets are around. If there seems to be a lack of Auto Locksmiths in your area, but many domestic, then you may consider undertaking an Auto Locksmith course. Taking any specialist Locksmith course is going to make you stand out in the area you wish to work in, the more niche skills you have, the more work you can take on.

Not Looking for a Career in Locksmithing, but to Expand Skills in Your Current Role?

1 and 2 Day Courses are good for those already in careers such as maintenance, caretakers, security, etc. Adding Locksmithing techniques to your skillset is a great way to advance your career. A maintenance man who can open a jammed door is going to save their company money in the long run. You can either pay for this yourself or talk to your employer about funding a course for you.
