Locksmithing is a fantastic career to be part of; working your own hours, being your own boss and supplementing your work with subcontracting to bring in a healthy wage are all great pulls to newcomers to the industry and the reason seasoned professionals stay. There is always room for improvement as a Locksmith and as we ease out of the UK lockdown it is on top of many Locksmiths lists to improve the quality and income of their work. So without further ado, check out our top 3 tips on becoming a successful Locksmith in our blog below!
1. Quality Training
We all know that to become an efficient and successful Locksmith, the correct training is fundamental. The most important thing you can do when choosing your provider is research! Research what the training provider can offer you, the accreditations or qualifications achieved and if they can offer you any further assistance once the course is completed.
Top tip: steer clear of complete online courses; to become a successful Locksmith you will need practical training.

Every Locksmith needs a good set of tools to get the job done. This can be expensive to begin with if you have no existing tools but as time progresses your collection of tools will do too. In the beginning it is important to have all the tools that you require to get the job done after all you don’t want to be walking away from paying jobs just because you’re missing a tool, at the same time you don’t want to waste money on tools you’ll never use.

Marketing your business is a big one when you decide to set up your own company, it is vital in bringing in profit and expanding your network. Nowadays there are so many ways to market your business it can be confusing. Take a look at a quick run through of marketing ideas below and check out our blog ‘How to Market your Locksmith Business’ here!
Word of Mouth
Word of mouth is important in the Locksmithing industry. Many people ask others for advice so ensure you are always polite and courteous with your customers. You never know they could lead you to your next job!
Social media marketing has only been around a few years but it is leading in the way people buy products and services. The beauty of using social media to market your business is that you do not have to pay to market your business unless you want to and there is a potential for hundreds if not thousands of potential customers to see your business as the majority of us spend a good few hours on social media every day.
Facebook is a good place to start when marketing your Locksmith business as it is relatively easy and free to set up an account. You can invite your ‘Facebook Friends’ to ‘Like’ your page which immediately builds your network and add photos and blogs to your Facebook page to draw in much appreciated attention. We talk more about Facebook for Business in our blog linked above. There are also plenty of online guides and YouTube tutorials out there should you need them.
As well as advertising online there are also plenty of opportunities to market your business offline. This could be in the telephone book or in your local directory. Offline advertising costs money but reaches a demographic that you may not reach online such as the elderly who may not have Facebook accounts.
Another offline way to market your business is to ensure that you have strong brand awareness. This will ensure that your Locksmith business is easily recognizable and helps customers remember your business name. Start with a simple, clean, easy to read logo; include a simple image and your business name using a clear, clean font. Once you have that you can use your logo in many places such as on your website, social media platforms, in your offline advertising, on your van and even on your work t-shirts. Not only will this help customers remember your name and likely use you again but it gives your business some authority and will help you look professional!
